People are usually more concerned about the present and future. They worry and try to predict what's going to happen next. Then they make plans for several possibilities. Isn't this demanding enough? Why spend valuable time worrying about the past as well? Because history shows how different people can be in terms of values, beliefs, and cultural practices. We see how widely the human experience can vary depending on the time and place when you were born and how mankind has struggled to inhabit and share this world. Studying history lets you see how the past has shaped the present and how it will shape the future. It helps you understand local, national and ...

Doing homework at the last minute is the universal norm for students, and huge programming assignments are no exception to this rule. Decluttering the work area, using planning apps, and blocking all distractions will help immensely in getting the work done on time. Here are the top productive tips to finish complex programming tasks quickly if the deadline is really short, but the workload is huge. Breaking into small modules Divide the programming assignment into small modules, prioritize ...
Technology is advancing very fast, and so should you. One of the most notable changes is the advancement in computers, which is gradually becoming a necessity. To operate the computer at advanced levels, you must understand coding. It is a daunting task for older adults, but it is pretty simple when introduced to kids at an early stage. What is coding? Codes are creative commands that are fed to computers to complete a specific instruction. Coding is, therefore, learning the different commands that are used by computers to perform different functions. It is also called programming, and in a layman's language, it is often known as learning of the computer ...
Educational supervision-that is, the field responsible for preparing teachers for the classroom—is way behind the curve when it comes to embracing contemplative, holistic approaches to instruction. Ironically, teachers, students, and the schools where supervisors work, have embraced the contemplative movement. For example, the mindfulness revolution has entered schools at an impressive rate. Yoga-based programs are in at least 1,000 U.S. schools. Educators are turning to these practices as coping mechanism for society’s increasing stress, anxiety, and distraction. Let’s explore why this even matters. If you’re not familiar with the term, instructional or ...
This entry is a sort of melange of different teaching-related ideas that have been circulating in my head for the past few months, but I haven't had a chance to write them down until now. I regularly hold onto news articles and now this blog gives me an opportunity to expand upon some of them. In particular, this somewhat nebulous and inchoate post is directed toward my students. I hope they will read the attached links and take a different and perhaps more idealistic approach to their education. The first link here is about the habits of good learners . Students who are in my class are already exposed to a number of handouts and "tips for success" in ...

What is the APD for? The Arabic Papyrology Database is a tool enabling you to access the editions of Arabic documents written on different material such as papyrus, parchment or paper. Those productive editions are an often unraised treasure for almost every aspect of Islamic history up to the 16th c. A.D. The entire texts of all documents in stock (currently 1629 out of about 2,500) are searchable on different layers and with variant readings within the tool 'Documents'. The tool 'Search' allows to investigate linguistic peculiarities. Each document is also provided with its metadata, amongst others place and date of origin or its genre as for instance ...
When I first considered going to graduate school in 1991 I set a seemingly small goal for myself—to be footnoted just once. I shared this odd idea with my father, and while it seemed insignificant, I explained it to him like this. To be footnoted I would have to: enjoy moderate success in grad school, conduct work in an archives, compose a scholarly article or book based on that research, find a publisher to accept my work, pass a peer review process by experts in my field, hold one of my published works in my hand, convince (or force) other people to read my article or book, and impress (or infuriate) people enough to actually cite my work in their own publication. ...
We search constantly for ways to teach students better, to serve our discipline, profession, and the broader public more fully, and to stay relevant in this digital era. I would like to propose one strategy that has the potential to advance our collective capacity on all of these fronts: a new method of digital humanities-informed teaching and learning that I term class-sourcing . This concept adapts the term crowdsourcing, meaning the outsourcing of tasks to a wide group of volunteers, for instance the organization of information best exemplified by Wikipedia. A related but distinct process, class-sourcing consists of two elements, namely having students and ...
