Applying Source Information: Quoting, Paraphrasing, and Summarizing

Academic essays written by students on various subjects rely on outside information to support and assist their ideas, points, and arguments. If you're writing an analytical essay example about a piece of writing, you'll look into how the text was written and why the author chose to write it This outside information is gathered from scholarly sources such as research papers and scholarly articles, that are written and reviewed by scholars and experts in their fields. By aligning your ideas with the experts allows your writing to induce the same authority over the subject matter as the scholars have.

Many writers come up with expert ideas and arguments but lacking expertise in using scholarly information, end up taking help from a free essay writer. As an academic writer, it is incumbent upon you to know how to properly use outside information in your writing to support your ideas, as it is central to academic writing.

There are three major ways that you can borrow expert opinions and ideas to use in your writing: quoting, paraphrasing, and summarizing. Each of the ways has its own purpose and uses and is commonly used in all academic essays.

Quoting the source information

You should use quotations in the writing when the message that the quote delivers cannot be delivered using your own words, without losing its effectiveness. Each quote no matter how big or small should be enclosed in quotation marks and cited in-text right after.

Direct quotation

The quote should be used word to word and should be enclosed in quotation marks to show that the text has been taken without any changes from the original source cited right after the closing quotation mark.

Once a quote is quoted you can refer it to in the latter part of the essay without repeating the quote. However, if the source quote(primary) has a quote(secondary) in it already, you will only include the secondary quote that was within the primary source material and frames it in the information of the primary source material.

Block Quotations

The block quotation is any quote that exceeds four lines in the writing. These quotes can be a separate passenger or lengthy writing. They are presented without any quotation marks but only indented from the left margin, such that they stand out from the rest of the text. However, before presenting the block quotation you should introduce it in a short paragraph including its source title, author, and/or date of publication.
Paraphrasing the source information
When you paraphrase a material form source text, instead of using the text word to word, you rephrase it into your own words and present it to the reader of your essay. However, this doesn’t absolve you from citing the source in-text and putting the reference information at the end of the essay as well.

To paraphrase a text you will need to understand the context of the information as well as its content fully, otherwise you might misinterpret the information. Paraphrasing shows your reader the effort you put into understanding the text and presenting it to the reader in simpler words. However, you should put the keywords borrowed from the source in quotation marks every time they are used in the paraphrased text. If you are assigned to write a persuasive essay examples you should have a complete understanding of it

Summarizing the source information

At times it is necessary that you put light upon the context of the information to help the readers grasp the ideas clearly. Here, it is more suited to the academic essay if the background comes from a scholarly paper or source.

By summarizing the main points, ideas, and the outcome of the source information, you provide your reader with scholarly information and help them understand the topic and the various ideas on the basis of expert opinion and findings.
