In addition to the many other sessions and events compiled in
Teaching and Learning at AHA23
, please consider participating in the Grading Writing Charrette and/or the Assignment Charrette.
Details:
Submission deadline extended to November 14
The AHA will convene two charrettes during the annual meeting in
Philadelphia
: an assignment charrette and a grading writing charrette. What is a charrette? Both events are interactive gatherings where attendees can workshop and discuss their course materials with fellow educators. Anyone planning to attend the annual meeting, which will take place January 5 to 8, 2023, is welcome to apply.
Accepted participants will receive a formal letter of invitation to present their work at the AHA annual meeting and have their name featured in the online program. Some past participants have found such a letter helpful in obtaining travel funds from their home institutions. (Current K–12 teachers at public schools in Philadelphia are eligible to receive free annual meeting registration and can bring up to two students at no cost. Email
annualmeeting@historians.org
from your school email address to receive the discount code.)
Read on for more information about each charrette. Questions can be sent to Rachel Wheatley at
rwheatley@historians.org
Assignment Charrette (Sunday morning, Jan. 8)
Anyone teaching in undergraduate or K-12 education, including faculty and graduate students, who has a new or existing teaching assignment (including traditional assignments, educational activities, or assessments) and would benefit from in-depth review and discussion with faculty from other institutions should consider participating.
Submit your Assignment
Preregistration will be required
and can be completed when registering for the annual meeting. Lunch will be included Sunday from noon-1PM. (Current K–12 teachers at public schools in Philadelphia are eligible to receive free annual meeting registration and can bring up to two students at no cost. Email

Grading Writing Charrette (Friday morning, Jan. 6)
Similar in format to the assignment charrette, this workshop allows educators in undergraduate and K-12 education to discuss writing assignments used in the classroom.
Submit your Grading Writing Project
Applications must be received by Monday, November 14, 2022
Participant notifications will be sent by November 21. Accepted participants may be limited based on room capacity.
What to expect
Each charrette will begin with a short orientation and run for 2-3 hours, depending on how many participate. The bulk of the time will be reserved for participants to work in small groups with a facilitator and offer in-depth feedback on each other's course materials. Each participant will have a few minutes to introduce their submitted materials and request particular help with problems or aspects of designing or implementing it and/or with assessing students' work. The expectation is that participants will use feedback to revise their course materials for the future. Participants will reconvene at the end of the period to discuss the lessons from all groups.
