Bio

Jaime Alvarez, PhD, is a South Texas historian, educator, and writer based in Laredo, Texas. His research focuses on South Texas history, Laredo history, Texas-Mexico borderlands, border history, political violence, and the relationship between local communities and state authority along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Dr. Alvarez earned his PhD in History from Liberty University, where his doctoral research examined negotiated sovereignty along the Texas-Mexico border and the ways border communities, law enforcement officials, political actors, and national governments contested and exercised authority. His research includes the history of Laredo and the Rio Grande borderlands, the Mexican Revolution, cross-border political activity, and the assassination of Mexican revolutionary general Lucio Blanco.

In addition to his historical research, Alvarez is a secondary and college-level educator with experience teaching history and dual-enrollment courses. His broader interests include history education, political thought, historical literacy, and making academic history accessible to general audiences.

Writing as “The South Texas Historian,” Alvarez publishes historical commentary and public-facing scholarship through his website, STXHistorian.com, and his Substack newsletter, A Historian’s Take. His work connects the history of South Texas and the U.S.-Mexico borderlands with broader conversations about politics, culture, education, and the value of historical thinking.
