I wanted to call your attention to an experimental, book-club format session on Sunday at AHA annual meeting this year. It will cover some of the big questions in higher education, and should be an exciting conversation. I hope to see some of you take part in this face-to-face session in Atlanta.

Due to a schedule change, former AHA president William Cronon (Univ. of Wisconsin-Madison) will join Anne Hyde (faculty chair of the AHA Tuning project, now of Univ. of Oklahoma, formerly of Colorado Coll.) leading book-club style conversation about Andrew Delbanco's recent book, College: What it Was, Is, and Should Be.

As you well know, there are many important issues facing our discipline and history programs at colleges and universities across the country. This experimental session would be a rare opportunity to talk about the social, cultural, and economic underpinnings of higher education in the United States with two such distinguished historians, who have spent time at different types of institutions.

Yes--this session is scheduled for the last time slot of the meeting, Sunday, January 10, from 11:00 AM-1:00 PM. But this is a good reason to arrange an afternoon departure if you can. And I know from experience that by that time in the meeting, all the hectic energy is gone and some of the best, most engaged conversations are at these Sunday sessions.

Also, you can get 40% off your purchase of the book. Space will be limited to provide an intimate setting; please sign up in advance. See below.

Let me know if you have any questions.

    Sincerely,

    Julia Brookins

As the commercialization of American higher education accelerates, more and more students are coming to college with the narrow aim of obtaining a preprofessional credential. The traditional four-year college experience-an exploratory time for students to discover their passions and test ideas and values with the help of teachers and peers-is in danger of becoming a thing of the past.
