For those of you in the Northeast/Mid-Atlantic, here is another opportunity to participate in an assignment charrette and reconnect in person with other historians, even if you can't make it to the AHA Annual Meeting:

The Northeast Regional Conference for History Educators will be held October 29, 2016, from 9am to 1pm. The conference is sponsored by the AHA, NILOA, and NJCCC and is hosted by Bergen Community College at the Meadowlands, 1280 Wall St. West, Lyndhurst, NJ. There is no registration cost, but participants must register before October 15 on the conference website http://bergen.edu/history/conference/ .

The central feature of the conference will be the Assignment Charrette. The Assignment Charrette is workshop that has been run with great success at the 2016 AHA annual meeting and will be offered again in 2017. The charrette requires participants to provide, in advance of the workshop, an assignment that they have given or plan to give their students. The assignment could be anything from a small daily group activity to a larger research paper. In small groups, the participants then share their assignments with their colleagues and, using a series of prompts and questions, collaborate with them on ways to improve student learning outcomes from the assignment. This collaborative reflection on our assignments allows us to discuss what we want students to learn from the study of history and how our instruction and assignments can be altered to better achieve that outcome.

Dan McInerney of Utah State and my AHA colleague Emily Swafford (Manager of Academic Affairs) will also participate in this event. Thanks to Sarah Shurts and the other Tuners in the area who have done all the work to put the program together.

Follow the link to register (no cost) and submit your assignment. Deadline is October 15. We hope you can make it!

This looks like an exciting opportunity to share and grow through collaboration. I will forward it to the new Executive Director of the NJ Council for the Social Studies, Hank Bitten to help get the word out.

Will look forward to seeing Emily there.
